As educators and parents, we’re united by a common goal: helping our children grow into resilient, thoughtful, and self-aware individuals. In today’s world, that journey is increasingly shaped by the influence of technology, social media, and an ever-evolving social landscape.

Recently, I watched the film Adolescence—a powerful and emotional story that captures the complexity of coming of age in the digital era. While this film is not intended for younger children, I believe it’s an incredibly valuable watch for parents of upper elementary and middle school students, and even more so for those raising teenagers.

Adolescence explores themes that many of us are already grappling with at home and in our school community:

  • The impact of social media on self-esteem and identity

  • The challenges young people face in building authentic relationships

  • The often difficult, but critical, role of parents in guiding their children through emotional and social turmoil

This isn’t a movie to watch casually—it’s one that invites reflection. It may even feel uncomfortable at times, as it portrays the vulnerability, confusion, and pain that can surface during adolescence. But therein lies its value. It reminds us just how much our children need steady, present adults who are willing to listen without judgment and love without conditions.

If you choose to watch Adolescence, I encourage you to view it through a parenting lens:

  • What fears and pressures might your child be facing that you haven’t yet seen?

  • How can you foster stronger, more open communication at home?

  • What boundaries or values around technology and relationships need more attention?

While this film is not recommended for young viewers due to mature content, it can be a powerful tool for starting conversations and gaining perspective. Watching it on your own—or with a trusted friend or parenting partner—can help spark meaningful dialogue and deepen your understanding of the adolescent experience.

At our school, we’re committed to supporting the whole child—not just academically, but emotionally and socially as well. As always, we are here to partner with you as you navigate the incredible and challenging journey of parenting in today’s world.
